Whine wealthy whine

This is a comment in response to Whine Wealthy Whine

I completely agree with you. I thought that in our country anybody can run for president. But apparently not, you have to have tons of money in order to run. Looking at the household incomes of the 3 major presidential candidates it’s shocking. My question is why they are earning that much money in the first place, our government should be spending less money, paying these people huge salaries, and maybe start paying off the national debt we have. Also why do these candidates have so much money?? If it were me running for president I would start donating to charities, and giving back as soon as I can, so the American people don’t feel like I am greedy and keeping the money for myself and family. I understand that many candidates spend great amounts of money on their campaign, but come on seriously who needs that much money?
In addition, it really upset me when I read that McCain’s wife files separately because she has inherited a brewery that is worth over one million dollars. Why do that, to me that is cheating the system. People should not be able to get away with that, especially people that are in our government. Like I said earlier, start giving some of that back to the people, no one needs that amount of money. I would be more likely to vote for a candidate that was giving back. These people do have a major roll in our country, and sometimes do a great job at it, but seriously do they need that much money?

The Ten Commandments and their presents in our Government

The Ten Commandments and their presents in our Government
We are supposed to be a government that separates its church and state, yet there are many instances to where it is not true. The Ten Commandments are everywhere we look. But there is a constant argument going on that church and state are not supposed to be connected.
Some major places that you can find our state and church link together are our money, the pledge of allegiance, and the Supreme Court building. Our money is still being printed with “in god we trust,” and when the new one dollar coins came out and they moved it to being printed on the side of the coin and not on the front of it where it was previously printed. Many people were upset that it didn’t say it any longer because they thought it had been removed completely, but then people found out that it did say it, and they were ok with it being that way. In addition, a couple years back when the pledge of allegiance was being said in a classroom of a girl who was atheist, the father sued because his little girl was told she had to say it. Now in classrooms teachers can’t make their students say it, but they can make them stand for it. In my experience many student will say it and will leave out “under god,” and say the rest. Likewise, the Ten Commandments are written in the Supreme Court building. They have been there forever; if the argument of separation in church and state continues and proceeds will they have to fix a building that has been that way since day one?
So if the church and state are not supposed to be connected at all then why can we find it everywhere? Our country started as a very religious country. It has always been that way, and now that we are such a diverse country people are starting to speak up about it more and more. Is it ok for our church and state to be associated with one another, since our founding fathers were so religious and they framed our country to be what it is. Or should we conform to no relation between the two because today is not the same as it was back when our country was formed? I’m not sure that either of those questions can ever be answered, by our government or us personally. It is not written anywhere that church and state should be separated. But we all argue that they should. I am not for or against it. In some instances I feel that they should be separate and in others I feel that they should be together.

Response to When will our troops come home?

This is in response to "When Will Our Troops Come Home"
I totally agree with you. This is such a hot topic among the United States people, if people aren’t talking about the presidential candidates they are more than likely talking about the troops and when we are going to get to come home. So many of our men and women have gone over there to fight, and have lost their lives… for what?? We haven’t really gotten anything out of this war except spending billions of dollars on it. When I read this commentary, it was like they took the words right out of my mouth. I feel the same way about the war, and that we need to get out as soon as possible.
On a different but same note, I recently just saw the move “Stop Loss,” it is such a good movie, and it really makes you think about what our soldiers are going through. When they have done their time in Iraq and then come home and are planning on getting out, then they get stop loss, which means that they have to go back and do another tour. They have to go back because no one is signing up for the military these days; no one wants to go over to Iraq. So if you feel very strongly about the war and the soldiers then go see the movie. It’s a wake up call! Someone please bring our troops home, so that all the families of the soldiers can have them home.

We Should Elect Senator Obama!

We Should Elect Senator Obama
The United States should elect senator Obama for the next President, in November 2008. Senator Obama is highly qualified for the job with all that he has done being a senator, and he has a great attitude on the way the country should run. For example, he wants to get out of Iraq as soon as we can. He will stat removing one to two combat brigades each month, and have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months. Obama makes it clear that we will not build any permanent bases in Iraq. He will keep some troops in Iraq to protect our embassy and diplomats; if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda He sees that we are just loosing our men over there and not really getting anything done, and he has a plan to make that change.

His heath care plan for the country is to create a new national health plan to allow individuals with out access to affordable insurance coverage to buy coverage similar to that available to members of Congress. His health care plan will get many of the Americans that can’t afford to get health insurance, to get it at a more affordable price. Also, he sees how many Americans are struggling, his plan is to increase the number of working parents eligible for Earned Income Tax Credits, increase the benefit available to parents who support their children through child support payments and reduce the marriage penalty. He can relate to Americans struggling because he saw his own mother not taking care of her health because she was so worried about paying her health care bills that she died from cancer.
In additions to the tax cuts, Obama wants to use $75 billion in tax cuts and direct spending to stimulate the economy. He would provide immediate $250 tax cut to workers and their families, and an immediate temporary $250 bonus to seniors in their social security checks. By doing this it would hopefully help boost our economy. Furthermore, Obama wants to make mends with the Middle East. He wants to make peace, and alliances with them; unlike McCain who wants to make alliances with surrounding countries, and then force them to comply. Obama has a brighter out look on things.
Senator Obama also has such a positive attitude towards the world. When his own pastor, bashed black people, he came out and gave a speech that could not have said it better. He is one of the firsts to confront a wider and more complicated discussion about race in America, a discussion Obama contends he is uniquely qualified to initiate. "I am the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas," Obama said. "I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins, of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible." Obama coming out and saying those words, take a lot of courage, not many people would do that in today’s world. He has obviously thought long and hard about his campaign and being a black man, he felt that he should address the issue of race. He said it perfectly, his mind set on how the country should be run is great and he is the perfect candidate for the Presidency.

Hillary should get out now!

Hillary Should Get Out Now
By: Jonathan Alter
Feb 23, 2008

Jonathan Alter, was born in Chicago 1957, and graduated from Harvard in 1979. He has been working for Newsweek since 1983, where he now is a columnist and a senior editor. In the 1980’s, for a decade he was a critic on the media, he would hold other news organization accountable for their coverage; he was one of the first to do so. Then in 1991, Newsweek allowed him to have the first political commentary column. He also became well known the night of the 2000 elections. He went onto NBC news to talk about the problem with the “butterfly ballots.” He told reporters that the recount were “more art than science.” That statement made many conservatives angry. His column has been very unpredictable, and he has been a strong critic on President Bush. He wrote a book The Defining Moment, which is about when Franklin Roosevelt was president, and how the U.S. became a dictatorship. His book has received many great reviews.
Mr. Alter has some very good points in his article. I think that he spoke a little too soon though, because if you look at the polls now Obama and Clinton are almost at a dead even race. This has been the most interesting race so far, and tomorrow with Texas and Ohio voting, Mr. Alter maybe wrong.
He says that Hillary has no chance to catch up to Obama, which is looking to be true, but with these two big states voting tomorrow, it may all change. She does have to put her game face on, because Obama is doing much better than her campaign thought that he would. He says that she needs a 20 delegate lead on Obama, or the delegate math just won’t work in her favor. He may or may not be right, we just don’t know. Obama does also need to gain some superdelegates in Denver, but Hillary needs to really step it up.
Obama has more pledge delegates, and the majority of vote, which means that Hillary needs to close the gap which means she needs to dominate in all other states. Like he said that everyone wrote Hillary off when she lost in the caucus in Iowa. Things happen in politics and you have to be careful not to speak up too soon or it will come back and bite you in the butt.
Mr. Alter says that Hillary only has a chance to win, if Obama messes up so badly that he gets disqualified. Obama has been very excellent about making sure he doesn’t mess up. He has messed up a few small times but like Mr. Alter said we are to the point that we like him so much we just blow it off.
Mr. Alter does have so good points, but he may have spoken too soon. We will find out on March 5.

Young people are rockin' the vote - at last

Young people are rockin' the vote - at last
Written by Stphen Winn
Febuary 12, 2008

Stephen Winn talks about how the younger population is finally coming out and voting, to hopefully make the world a better place for them to live in. He blames the baby boomers era for screwing everything up. He mentions how they have allowed our government to get caught up in two different wars. He also says that the baby boomers have asked the government to buy stuff that isn’t really needed, which in return makes the national debt sky high. This Man has some very good points.
I completely agree with his article. As he mentions that there have been numerous signs that there is a need to reform social security and Medicare, and yet still haven’t done anything. Since our government hasn’t done anything to fix this, us youngsters are going to have to pay it. When all of our parents go in to retirement and start collecting their social security, it is going to put more strain on the government, and then they are going to raise taxes. Raising taxes is going to help the government get more money and make it harder for us to live in this world, and actually make it.
I like how President Bush has his No Child Left behind Act, but because the government hasn’t done anything to improve our debt, that many children will not be able to go to college because we won’t be able to pay for it. With the government stepping in, this problem is getting worse. Our government needs to stop stepping in to the states problems, and fix there own problems. With our government making all of these problems, and not fixing them our countries name is pretty much mud around the world, as Winn mentions.
As Winn states that President Obama speaks about unity and fixing our national problems, it is catching the ears of college students. This leads us to the recent spike in young voters. I know personally that I was never interested, and because of the internet and television, spreading the news so fast it has made it much easier to follow the races. This time around we are not going to sit around and watch and see what happens, we are going to do something about it. With all of the younger people voting the out comes of the presidential race may be very different than everyone expects it to be.

Georgia Loses Federal Case in a Dispute about Water

Georgia Loses Federal Case in a Dispute about Water
Today Atlanta, Georgia lost a significant court case, over the amount of water they wanted to take from an Atlanta area reservoir. Alabama and Florida, who were opposed to Atlanta taking the water, were glad to hear that Atlanta will not be able to take as much water as they wanted. Atlanta was unable to take the water because they had not obtained the correct approval.
Alabama and Florida had said that Atlanta would take the water that normally flows downstream to their consumers. The two states had brought the appeal suit up to cancel out the agreement they had with the Army Corps of engineers. The three judge panel, of the United States Court of Appeals of the Columbia Circuit agreed that the agreement was not valid, because the two parties had not acquired Congressional approval. The 2003 contract between the Army corps, and Georgia was permitted to increase its share of the reservoir allocated for water storage to 22.9 from 13.9 percent. Florida and Alabama had been fighting this agreement for the last two decades, and final took it to court. Alabama and Florida, which are dependable on the water from Lake Lanier for power generation, industry, recreation and commercial fishing, argued Georgia no right to take the water from the lake. The lake was originally was built for hydropower. Georgia depends on the water from that reservoir, but other states argue that Georgia had bad planning for water usage, so there for they now depend on it.
